Horatio Alger
Horatio Alger was the author of inspiring stories for young boys that were popular in the 1860’s through the 1870’s. These 10-cent novels were for poor boys living in cities, meant to teach them that they can be successful with hard work. These ‘rags to riches’ myths urged kids to struggle against adversity to achieve wealth. The stories tended to be exaggerations, since it was very heard to break through the wealth gap but they were important for boosting morale and keeping the working class, working.
